High School General Information
1.1 School Profile
In
January 1963, Republic Act No. 3705 converted the Ilocos Norte Normal school
into the Northem Luzon Teachers College (NLTC). In 1977, it offered a four
years education course. By the year 1974-1975, there was a need to provide a
laboratory high school for the student teachers, hence the Bureau of Public
schools approved the creation of the NLTC Laboratory High School.
In
1976, NLTC was named Northern Luzon State University (NLSU), hence the high
school was also name NLSC Laboratory School. When the college eventually became
the College of Education of the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) under

1.2 Academic
Support System
In
supporting efficient and effective learning, LHS-MMSU provides academic support
system which integrated with the main institution, The Mariano Marcos State
University itself. As the laboratory of College of Teacher Education, LHS
limits their number of students each year. The limitation represents that they
want a number of proportional. It aims So, the existence of LHS itself can
accommodate all the student teachers for having practice teaching.
The
Laboratory High School is managed well by the faculty officers as the other
schools. All the aspects are integrated into laboratory school under the
College of Teacher Education.

1.3 Teaching System
In
assisting the students learning, teaching system takes rules significantly in
order to create meaningful learning. Based on my interview to one of the
faculty MMSU-LHS and as I observed, the students' individual work and group
work always considered as the score should be collected by the students. The
score of the individual work and the group are collected to be record in the
Record Book as the source of final result of the students which shown to the
students in every quarter of semester.
Considering the good expectation of
the students' result, the teachers implement some strategies to gain the
students interest to pay attention a lot to their study. By prioritizing the
students' critical thinking and their own understanding toward the lesson or
the topic, the teacher applies the individual and group work in every meeting
in the classroom.
1.4 Materials And Other Learning Sources
The
materials given to the students are implemented based on the Education
Department of the Philippines. The government of the Philippines provides a
hand book for each subject in the applicable curriculum. In addition, the
teacher also tries to find another source of learning from internet to find the
current issues happen in society.
The
school also facilitate with projector and LCD screen in each classroom that can
introduce technology to teacher and student. This also make teaching process
more effective and efficiently.
1.5 Measurement And Evaluation System
The
measurement in MMSU LHS is based on the K12 curriculum and for the evaluation
they have two examinations, midterm examination and final examination. Like in
every other school, the teacher in MMSU LHS also use an assignment or daily
quiz to measure their student knowledge.
1.6 Curriculum
The
MMSU LHS used K to 12 Curriculum, which is implemented from Grade 7 - 9. For
the Grade 10, they are still using the previous curriculum that is Science
Curriculum
1.7 Teaching Plan
As
a student teacher, we have to make a teaching/lesson plan before start
teaching. Lesson plan will help us to control the classroom management and give
the material to the student effectively. Teacher has to be creative in making
the lesson plan because it determines the student knowledge. Lesson plan need
to be simple to understand and make the student enjoy and understand the
material that teacher gives.

Pedagogical Content
2.1 Teaching Method
The
teaching method used by the teacher is teacher-centred approach which mean that
the teacher controls the classroom and student learning experience. The teacher
gave the student specific instruction to follow. In this context, the teacher
gives an instruction for the student to do an essay. Teacher said that the
student can’t replace their answers or do any correction because it considered
copying their friend answers. If the teacher knows this, the answer will be
considered as false even though the answer is right. This will make the student
more careful and more responsible in examination.
2.2 Learning
Material and Innovation
The
teacher used variety of the learning material from reading material in resource
book to material from digital devices. The teacher often used the resource book
during to make the lesson plan and summarize it in PowerPoint presentation to
simplify the material. This can make class not to boring because the teacher
can show another example with video or photo from the internet that related to
the topic. This innovation also helps the teacher during the online classroom.
2.3 Sources
Of Learning and Technology
Every
teacher has the guidebook to teach their student while the student has a
handbook for study. The classroom also facilitates with projector and lcd
screen to accommodate the learning process. There are also computer lab and
library so the student has more access to study at school. The school also
allow the student brought their gadget to class so the student can find other
learning references. Students can’t use their gadget during the classroom
except if the teacher instruct them to used it (like filling a google form or
pop quiz from online platform).
2.4 Authentic
Assessment
Authentic
assessment is a method of evaluating a student's knowledge and skills by having
them apply them to real-world situations. It's also known as performance
assessment or alternative assessment. In laboratory high school the assessment
system such as daily exam, quiz, midterm exam and the final exam.
2.5 Overall
Impression of My Cooperating Teacher
The
teacher demonstrated structured classroom management. The student is very
discipline to follow teacher rule and instruction. The teacher is very creative
in delivering the material like using the PowerPoint presentation and shows
example from internet so it more engaging to the student knowledge and
experience. The teacher is firm but kind so the student can be discipline and
cautious in their daily life.

4.
Observation on teacher
4.1 Planning
For Teaching
Based
on the Philippines national curriculum, teacher guidebook and the student
enthusiasm, I make a lesson plan based on teacher centred approach but I add
student approach so the class will be less formal and bounding between teacher
and student.
The
curriculum in Philippines and Indonesia is quite similar. The difference is in
the learning material and subject. Because of English is their second language,
the learning material in English subject is quite advance than in Indonesia.
So, for the lesson topic, I have to adapt the material and their learning
culture.
For
my lesson plan, I start with a mini game to trigger their knowledge and
followed by learning material and assignments.
4.2 Preparing
Lessons and Materials
Before
I make the lesson plan, I have to do some research, in another language I need
to study what will they study. Honestly, it’s a bit hard for me to choose the
right topic because of our background contrast.
After
I found the right topic, I make the material on the power point presentation. I
gather the information and material that related to my topic from the internet
and from the guidebook. I also have to find the example that related in daily
activity so the student can understand the topic I conveyed.
For
the assessment, I make an essay print out so I can make sure the authenticity
of their answer.
4.3 Teaching
In Class
Teaching
in class is a wonderful experience. I can feel their young blood spirit by
their question and enthusiasm. Maybe because I’m a new guy in their town and I
came from another nation.
I
started with the mini game to trigger their knowledge. They enjoy and learn
something new from my mini games. I monitored the whole class so that every
student can participate. I continued to the main topic by explained the
material one by one. I add some picture, video and example so they can
illustrate the topic. After done with the material, I gave them an assignment
by solving the essay I gave.
4.4 Measurement
And Evaluation
For
the evaluation, I give the student some essay to answer. Because of the time
limitation, the assignment is changed to a homework and they send the file on a
google form.
4.5 Other
The
student is very nice to me. They always want to know something new about my
country or my experience. They always ask politely and they give respect to
elderly.
I
saw students in this school have a lot of potential likes in sport or in
academic. They have a big curiosity about something they liked. Most of them
have won like basketball competition, pageant contest, and debate competition.
5.
Teaching practice
5.1 Procedures
Of Teaching
I
used the teacher centred approach to make a better classroom management and saw
the student potential. I started with the mini games called “guess the image”.
This mini game will trigger they knowledge and give them a hint about what will
they learn. The student who can answer will get a reward which is I gave them a
snack. This little reward can motivate the other student to participate in
answering the question. Even though they a little bit disappointed because they
thought I will give them the Indonesian snack, but still, they appreciate the
gift.
After
finished with the mini games, we moved the main topic. I choose the simple
language and related example from their daily activities. I also show them the
other example from the video from YouTube.
5.2 Time
Management and Organizing Activities
The
time allocation is about 40 minutes, which divided to;
·
10
minutes of minigames
·
15
minutes of main material
·
15
minutes of assignment
Due to the unpredicted agenda, the
assignment has changed to the homework. So, the time allocation is around 25
minutes. During the minigames, teacher need to pay attention to the students in
the classroom. Teacher also has to be responsive and give positive feedback if
there are student who can answer or didn’t understand. Time management is very
important to the teacher because it’ll make scheduled agenda so there will be
no topic or activity that missed.
5.3 Problem
Solving
·
Electronic
device
I
have a problem with my laptop when start the session. It takes a lot of time to
connect the projector. I ask help to my resource teacher and he suggested to
use his laptop.
·
Time
allocation.
Due
to the many events in MMSU LHS and typhoon in Ilocos Norte, the demo teaching
is held after the school mid exam. My resource teacher actually gives me 1 hour
for the demo teaching and I was able to handle it because in based on my lesson
plan, I just need 40 minutes.
5.4 Classroom
Management
Classroom
management is very important to make healthy and structured classroom
environment. In my opinion, this how to manage a classroom:
a.
Make
a simple lesson plan, this will help you to schedule the classroom activity.
b.
Make
a rule or learning contract to your student
c.
Try
to make a good impression to the student, start by introduce yourself, your
background or your dream to them. This will make the student feel much
comfortable and not feel intimidated.
d.
Give
a student chance to give their opinion or answer
e.
Give
the student positive feedback
f.
Try
to give them ice breaking so the class not feel too boring.

Summary and suggestions
6.1 Purpose
of practicum
The
purpose of the practicum is accommodating Indonesian student to have a teaching
experience abroad. This practicum helps our teaching skills in developing
classroom with different culture and educational environment. The practicum aimed to enhance
classroom management strategies and establish strong communication techniques.
6.2 Procedures
of practicum
The
practicum involved the student with the question from the minigames that makes
the student need to think to answer it. A reward system also implemented, by
using candy and snack, to motivate them.
6.3 Outcomes
of practicum
The
practicum successfully engaged student enthusiasm, especially the reward system.
The students show their enthusiasm in answering question because they are
motivated by the reward. Communication and instruction between student and
teacher were clear that creating a positive learning environment. the semi
formal communication makes the student comfortable with the material presented.
6.4 The
Challenges of Practicum
The
main challenge of this practicum the busy school agenda which made me have to
rearrange the agenda such as making lesson plans, plus there was a typhoon
warning which made school activities closed until a certain time. Fortunately,
after a discussion with my resource teacher and school advisor, my demo
teaching can be held after the midterm exam.
6.5 Overall
Impression
The
practicum successfully engaged student enthusiasm, especially the reward
system. The students show their enthusiasm in answering question because they
are motivated by the reward. Communication and instruction between student and
teacher were clear that creating a positive learning environment. the semi
formal communication makes the student comfortable with the material presented.
6.6 Suggestion
For Future Improvement
In my opinion, I have no problem with the different culture or the educational system because I still can adapt with it. For me, agenda or schedule is the crucial point. So in my suggestion, the university who want to send their student have to match the schedule in the target university so there’s no chaos or confusion for the student and the teacher who responsible in the target university.
